On December 22, 1944, Congress authorized the Flood Control Act, later named the Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program (PSMBP). The act called for the construction of a massive series of main stem dams, power plants and other water control and management systems to manage the waters of the Missouri River for flood control, navigation, irrigation and hydro power. It was out of this program that Garrison Diversion was born.

Like the waters of the Missouri, information about Garrison Diversion is a vital resource to the people of our state. But also like the mighty river, if left unmanaged, that information can easily become overwhelming and difficult to traverse and understand. That's the challenge this section of our Web site is designed to address.

We've included a lot of information here - from the project's history to studies, Garrison Diversion's Draft Reassessment Report and more. But we've also done our best to organize and present it in a way that makes this information clear and easy to navigate, like a well-managed waterway.
